Hydroseeding in Olympia WA is a great option for cultivating a lush, green, Pacific Northwest lawn. Unlike the immediacy of sod, the full process of hydroseeding takes a bit of time. With patience and a little effort, however, your newly hydroseeded lawn will soon be thriving. Here are four maintenance tips for caring for your new seedlings.

1. Water Daily

The single most important thing you can do to take care of a hydroseeded lawn is to water it every day. As a general rule of thumb, the newly seeded ground should be kept wet at all times. Seedlings are fragile when they first arrive. If they dry out or do not receive adequate moisture, seedlings can die and stop the germination process in its tracks. To keep them growing properly, you should water the lawn lightly about four to five times daily. Avoid heavy drenching and do not allow the lawn to dry out in between watering.

2. Mow Weekly

After seeding, the germination process typically lasts anywhere between three and four weeks. Avoid mowing until this stage is complete. After germination, you can begin mowing your new lawn. Weekly mowing is recommended. Try to move in different patterns each time; this is a good way to avoid tire tread buildup.

 3. Fertilizing Monthly

Fertilizing should be done around a month after hydroseeding. You can use a commercial fertilizer with ample phosphorus. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions and apply at four times the suggested rate. Always follow up a fertilizer application with generous watering.

4. Remove Rocks and Weeds as Needed

As you tend to your newly hydroseeded lawn, it’s common for rocks and weeds to pop up during the frequent watering period. Feel free to remove these as needed. Rocks can be picked or tucked and pushed back into the ground.
